Changing Culture: The Impossible, The Possible, and Living on the Difference

Dwane Lay

8:30 AM

Despite years of effort and an incalculable amount of money spent in the effort, companies are learning the difficult lesson that culture cannot be easily changed and formed. Engagement surveys, leadership retreats and ice cream socials are all futile attempts to make a significant shift. Real change must come in the way of reinvention, as a company is stripped to its core and built back up. Only then can fundamental changes be made, allowing new tools and thought patterns to change the way your business operates. In this session, attendees will:   (*) review the process of building culture, and the components, from the functional areas of HR that have a major impact (*) create an awareness of the difficulties in changing the culture of an organization, and the critical steps that must be taken to get started, and (*) define the role of HR and of leadership in changing and owning culture, the impact it has on business, and how to leverage it into a competitive advantage. The Future of HR: Delivering Competitive Advantage in Your Organization

Jennifer McClure

12:45 PM

Change is inevitable and has occurred since the beginning of time. However, the business and economic climate is currently changing and evolving faster than ever before, which means that the responsibilities of today’s HR practitioners are rapidly changing in order to keep up with – and stay ahead of – what’s required to directly impact business results. Current and future challenges for HR include increasing understanding of the business, developing systems and processes to measure and quantify results, and improving capabilities to align people strategies with organizational objectives. In this session, we’ll discuss how HR professionals must be strategic thinkers, excellent marketers, unexpected innovators and strong collaborators in order to ensure that the human and organization side of the business emerges as a key source of competitive advantage in the future of their organizations. The 'Cult' of Work

Bill Boorman

2:30 PM

Ever wondered why some companies put the “cult” in to culture, with employees who go the extra mile because they want to, rather than they have to? Cultures driven by the passion to do the right thing for colleagues, managers, clients and suppliers? Some companies claim to do this very well, but the reality is very different. There are, however, a growing band of “others” who do this very well. Looking through a social lens, Bill Boorman has ignored the brochures and used sentiment analysis to identify those businesses that are succeeding at putting the “cult” in culture - the places where people love to work, and customers and suppliers love to work with. Boorman looks at what can be learnt from these businesses, and how they have built these cultures, identifying common trends and unique case studies from around the world. This keynote is the pre-cursor to the book “The Cult of Work” which is an on-going research work for release late 2013. During the session, we will address culture indicators, mapping culture, achieving meaningful values and beliefs, and the difference between hype and delivery. At the end of this interactive keynote attendees will understand the meaning of being a real “great place to work” and will understand the role of HR in culture mapping and culture change. Participants will leave with a clear model and action plan to apply at work. (pre-approved for 1.25 HRCI recertification hours - Business Management and Strategy)
